Big Boy, the largest operating steam locomotive is one of eight left in existence of its class, and the only one working. The others were scrapped after being retired.

The front of the train, you can see part of the cow catcher, and the very front of the tank. I opted to present the image in black and white, as I liked the contrast between the black engine on the white sky.

The train heading off west. Also in the shot are some train aficionados, with whom I had the pleasure of making acquaintance. During the two-and-a-half hour wait, we talked about trains, and weather, and history.

Promontory is the site in Utah, where the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroad met in 1869 to form the first transcontinental railroad.
